{"id":108,"date":"2012-12-19T22:58:09","date_gmt":"2012-12-19T22:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihsteps.com\/wordpress\/?p=108"},"modified":"2012-12-19T22:58:09","modified_gmt":"2012-12-19T22:58:09","slug":"qa-visit-to-the-mangerq-december-19-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inhisstepsministry.com\/?p=108","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;A Visit to the Manger&#8221; by Tammy Maseberg, December 19, 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cO little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie.\u00a0 Above the deep and dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by.\u00a0 Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light.\u00a0 The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.\u201d\u00a0 ~~<em>O Little Town of Bethlehem<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phillip Brooks, an Episcopal priest, wrote those words to the well-known Christmas song after visiting Bethlehem in 1865.\u00a0 The organist at his church in Philadelphia added the music. \u00a0I picture Phillip being overwhelmed with emotion as he visited the Savior\u2019s birthplace in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>My journey to the Holy Land in 2007 was not a normal vacation.\u00a0 I will forever be changed\u2014as I should be.\u00a0 Christmas, of course, especially brings back the memories of being there.\u00a0 One of our excursions was to travel the six miles from Jerusalem to Bethlehem.\u00a0 We went through a security checkpoint at the entrance to Bethlehem.\u00a0 It made me sad that we had to go through a prison-like wall to get from the place where Jesus died to the place where He was born. \u00a0An interesting feeling, for sure.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What a privilege that we were able to visit this holy city! At the time we were there, most tour groups were not allowed to go into Bethlehem because of the ongoing political issues and subsequent security.\u00a0 Our guide was an Israeli citizen, so she had to stay behind at the gate.\u00a0 Because our bus driver was Palestinian, he was allowed to take us past the wall.<\/p>\n<p>We traveled through the narrow streets to the Church of the Nativity.\u00a0 Inside, we were led to the back of the church and down a narrow staircase.\u00a0 There we stood in a dark cave surrounded by low-hanging lanterns and gaudy decorations.\u00a0 I felt like the \u201ctrinket-ness\u201d of the room invaded the significance of what I was standing before. And, yet\u2014I could scarcely breathe.\u00a0 Mere words are not sufficient for how it felt to be there, in the spot thought to be where Jesus took His first breaths as a Man.\u00a0 It is one of my most treasured memories of the trip.
