{"id":102,"date":"2012-11-13T20:19:11","date_gmt":"2012-11-13T20:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihsteps.com\/wordpress\/?p=102"},"modified":"2012-11-13T20:19:11","modified_gmt":"2012-11-13T20:19:11","slug":"showing-christs-love-in-the-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inhisstepsministry.com\/?p=102","title":{"rendered":"SHOWING CHRIST\u2019S LOVE IN THE CHURCH by Tammy Maseberg, November 13, 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>And they\u2019ll know we are Christians by our love\u2026\u201d\u00a0 ~~Hymn lyrics by Peter Scholtes <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Peter Scholtes wrote the above words to a hymn of the same name in 1968.\u00a0 At the time, he was a Catholic priest in St. Brendan\u2019s Parish on the South Side of Chicago.\u00a0 Although it only took him a day to write, the song has become widely known and sung by countless people.\u00a0 Jars of Clay and Rebecca St. James are just two of the Christian artists who have recorded it.\u00a0 You can read more about Mr. Sholtes\u2019 life and how he came to write this song at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pscholtes.com\/obituary.cfm\">http:\/\/www.pscholtes.com\/obituary.cfm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, does the world really see the love of God in us?\u00a0 What kind of attitude do people sense in me?\u00a0 When Jesus walked on this earth, He was very clear in His instructions of how we should act as His followers.\u00a0 He said in <em>John 13:35, \u201cBy this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.\u201d (NIV)<\/em> In Matthew 22:34-40, the Pharisees tested Jesus by asking Him what the most important commandment of the Law was.\u00a0 He told them that the greatest and foremost commandment was to love God and that the second greatest was to <em>\u201c. . . love your neighbor as yourself.\u201d (NIV)<\/em> In Galatians 5:14, Paul repeats Jesus\u2019 words and then adds in verse 15, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.\u201d (NAS)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  As followers of God and His gospel, we are witnesses for Christ.\u00a0 There is no option here.\u00a0 The question is this:\u00a0 are we good witnesses or bad witnesses?\u00a0 When people see me, hear me speak, watch my conduct in day-to-day life\u2014do they see a good representation of Jesus and His character? \u00a0I hope so.\u00a0 Or, do they see me using my words and a judgmental attitude to beat others up emotionally? <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How can those who don\u2019t know Christ yet want to be in His Church if they don\u2019t see hope and encouragement waiting for them there?\u00a0 And, the Church is made of up of us\u2014God\u2019s people.\u00a0 So, it is up to us to show them what Jesus portrayed to all mankind when He came to this earth.\u00a0 That is, love and acceptance along with guidance and hope for a meaningful future.<\/p>\n<p>There are many things and circumstances in this world to bring discouragement\u2014stuff that can be beyond anyone\u2019s control.\u00a0 I really think people are so weary of also being battered and bruised emotionally by other people.\u00a0 We should offer something different, something so appealing that they will come running to the One who can give them everything they need.<\/p>\n<p>It is very simple. Love one another.
